Wilt Chamberlain’s nephew comments on Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers breaking the mark set by a Hall of Famer.
CBS Philadelphia, PA The buzz of the town continues to be Joel Embiid’s record-breaking performance in the Philadelphia 76ers’ victory over the San Antonio Spurs, with even Wilt Chamberlain’s family expressing their opinions.
Why Embiid scored the most points in team history with 70
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Chamberlain had owned the club record for the most points in a single game for the Sixers—68 in 1967—until Monday night.
With a 70-point performance that night, Embiid passes the Hall of Famer, and according to his family, that’s precisely what Chamberlain would have wanted.
Wilt Chamberlain’s nephew Olin Chamberlain Sr. stated, “I think he would say that records are meant to be broken, too.”
With 70 points in a single game on Monday night, Embiid accomplished something no Sixer has ever done before.
Additionally, Embiid is just the sixth player in NBA history to score 70 points or more. Additionally, he made history by being the first player to have at least 70 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists in one game.
His late “Uncle Dippy,” as Olin Chamberlain Sr. referred to him, would be quite proud.
“Uncle Dippy would be grinning broadly right now, without a doubt,” stated Olin Chamberlain Sr. “I can just imagine watching Joel Embiid, watching him play and the different things he does and how he dominates on the court.”
The Wilt Chamberlain Memorial Fund’s co-leader, Olin Chamberlain Sr., feels that Embiid’s historic performance is even more significant because of what it says about this Sixers team.
“I return to this collaboration, correct? Olin Chamberlain Sr. stated, “They see how one of their teammates is accomplishing something special, and everyone throws their arms around them and helps them get there.”
Regarding the future, Olin Chamberlain Sr. speculates that this might just be the beginning of a championship run that will cement Embiid’s legacy in Philadelphia indefinitely.
