The Boston Celtics seemed to have two captains on their roster during the opening several weeks of the 2021–2022 NBA season, as fans speculated over who would get the title.
The club struggled early in the season, so doubts about what may be holding up the process surfaced from the press, and for several weeks after that there was no word of one being selected. Ime Udoka, the head coach, then shot down the notion, saying that selecting captains for this season was “in the rear-view mirror.”
