Trevor Lawrence regrets that the Houston Texans did not sign CJ Stroud after the rookie quarterback was benched by the Jacksonville Jaguars….
After Matt Ammendola missed a field goal in the final seconds of the game, Trevor Lawrence led the Jacksonville Jaguars to their eighth victory of the season, defeating the Houston Texans 24-21. Texans rookie quarterback CJ Stroud once again shone with two touchdown passes.
Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars acknowledged that his team still needs to “clean up mistakes” despite being pleased with how they played against the Houston Texans.
Following his team’s victory over the Houston Texans, who were led by CJ Stroud, to seize control of the AFC South on Sunday, Trevor Lawrence made light of the fact that he wants the team’s immediate opponents to be as “bad as possible”.
In the closing seconds, Matt Amendola missed a 58-yard field goal that would have forced overtime, but Jacksonville prevailed 24-21 to improve to 8-3 overall.
It also set the stage for another exciting quarterback competition that the league will be able to watch for years to come.
“That’s how I see it, I want the teams in our division to be as bad as possible,” Lawrence said to reporters. “The way they’re playing is exciting, and I have no doubt that some fantastic matchups will occur in the future.
“CJ Stroud is performing admirably, and I have a lot of respect for a rookie who can play the way he does. He is playing lights out.
“Having been there myself, I understand how difficult it is. For years to come, this will be enjoyable.
But that’s not what I would choose. It would be better for us if the teams in our division didn’t have talented quarterbacks. But it’s encouraging to see that he’s improving and doing a fantastic job.
The play is expertly extended by Houston Texans quarterback CJ Stroud’s deft footwork before he finds his favorite target, Tank Dell, for the touchdown.
Josh Allen, an edge rusher, was outstanding in the final minutes of the game, and Christian Kirk and Calvin Ridley both had 89 receiving yards as the Jacksonville offense maintained the momentum it had found against the Tennessee Titans the week before.
“We are getting better every week, not just Calvin Ridley but the whole offense,” stated Lawrence. “We’re doing a lot of amazing things, but we need to play cleaner. We’re more explosive, we can move the ball at will.
“Too many careless errors and lost chances. We are aware of our responsibilities; it is a week-to-week endeavor.”
Now that they have a cushion at the top of their division, Lawrence and the Jags are well positioned to contend for the first seed in the postseason.
Matt Amendola of the Houston Texans was just inches away from giving his team the victory, but his kick bounces off the upright and gives the Jacksonville Jaguars the advantage.
The Texans, who selected Stroud as their quarterback with the second overall pick in the Draft, will continue to have faith that they can remain in the playoff conversation as long as they have glowing confirmation that they have identified their future quarterback.
“I have never seen a rookie possess such poise and command in the pocket. I constantly check the footwork to see if it’s calm in the pocket. Are you positioned to make an accurate throw? And he is,” Jason Bell of Sky Sports NFL said.
“He always seems balanced when he’s extending the play, and the best players do that. He repeatedly performed it in pivotal moments. This child is the epitome of success.”
