Tom Herman, a former football coach of Texas, has joined Florida Atlantic.

Florida’s Boca Raton — Tom Herman, the former football coach of the Texas Longhorns, is back in the college football scene after a two-season break. After four seasons with Texas, Herman was fired in January 2021. He has since accepted a position with Florida Atlantic.

Herman did not coach in 2022; instead, he worked as an NFL offensive analyst for the Chicago Bears in 2021. The Longhorns won the Alamo Bowl in 2020 and the Sugar Bowl in 2018 under Herman’s direction.

Following his third season with the Owls, Florida Atlantic fired head coach Willie Taggart last month. Sports Illustrated reports that the Owls went 15–18 under Taggart and finished 5-7 this season.

Herman stated in a news release from the football program, “It is an honor to have the opportunity to lead the Florida Atlantic football program.” “To Brian White, President Kelly, Mary Giardina, and all others who contributed to the search, I express my sincere gratitude. At FAU, everything is in place for us to succeed. fantastic facilities, a fantastic location, a terrific recruiting base, great leadership, and a group of already outstanding young men make up this team. All of these factors are critical to creating a successful program.”

Before accepting the Texas position, Herman had two excellent seasons as Houston’s coach. He has previously worked as an assistant at Texas (graduate assistant), Sam Houston State (2001–04), Rice (2007–08), Iowa State (2009–11), Ohio State (2012–14), and Texas State (2005–06).
