For those in New England, summer seems far off, but the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris are rapidly approaching.
The 41-person roster for Team USA was revealed on Tuesday, and four players from the Boston Celtics were chosen for the squad. Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, and Jrue Holiday are the contenders to join the US lineup in July as a 12-man player.
Other gifted names from around the league are on the list, which will be narrowed down when the final selection process kicks off in the spring. Team USA is also considering LeBron James, Joel Embiid, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant.
This team will have the opportunity to win a gold medal for the fifth time in a row in the 2024 Olympics. Head coach Steve Kerr’s first priority is assembling the most formidable Team USA group possible after the team’s disappointment in the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup last summer.
Brown and Tatum have a good chance of making the cut. Playing at an All-NBA caliber, the pair regularly scores more over 60 points in a game together. They made NBA history on Monday night when they defeated Dallas 119-110, becoming the first teammates to ever have more than 30 points, more than two blocks, and zero turnovers in a game.
Not to mention that Tatum has prior experience. He and Holiday were on Kerr’s 2020 Tokyo gold-winning squad.
Thirteen players—Durant with three, James and Chris Paul with two, Anthony Davis, Bam Adebayo, Damian Lillard, Devin Booker, James Harden, Tatum, Jimmy Butler, Holiday, Kyrie Irving, and Paul George with one—are in the pool, which is subject to change.
Aside from Jarrett Allen, the following individuals were also selected for the pool: Scottie Barnes, Mikal Bridges, Jarrett Allen, Paolo Banchero, Desmond Bane, Scottie Barnes, Jalen Brunson, Alex Caruso, Anthony Edwards, De’Aaron Fox, Aaron Gordon, Tyrese Haliburton, Josh Hart, Tyler Herro, Chet Holmgren, Brandon Ingram, Jaren Jackson Jr., Cam Johnson, Walker Kessler, Kawhi Leonard, Donovan Mitchell, Bobby Portis, Austin Reaves, Duncan Robinson, and Trae Young.
Although the pool may vary, the ultimate lineup for Team USA is anticipated to be decided around the beginning of May.
