SoFi and Jayson Tatum of the Celtics will donate more than $10million to support low-income families.

The great player for the Boston Celtics, Jayson Tatum, will assist low-income families in purchasing real estate in his native St. Louis, Missouri.

Tatum’s charitable foundation received a $1 million grant from financing business SoFi, and the five-time All-Star will utilize the money to help low-income, single-parent homebuyers with a down payment on a property.

When discussing the collaboration with SoFi with Thalia Beaty of the Associated Press, Tatum said that the concept originated from his upbringing by a single mother:

“When I was growing up, my mom and I had no idea about savings accounts or investments. But it goes without saying that we had to research and ask questions when I joined the NBA and began to generate money. And even in my younger years, it had always been significant to me. I simply knew that I wanted to help others who resembled me and who had a similar upbringing.”

Over the course of the next three to five years, SoFi will donate the money to Tatum’s charity; the foundation will decide who gets to receive the donations. It is not mandatory for members to obtain a mortgage through SoFi; but, SoFi will grant them access to tools and financial advising services.

In 2017, Tatum laid his groundwork the same year the Celtics selected him in the draft. Its goal is to “equip children and teens with tools that will empower them to be the positive change they need to see in their communities.”

Over the years, the foundation has arranged a number of charitable events in St. Louis and Boston, such as a hurricane relief rally to collect money for those affected by Hurricane Harvey in Florida and Texas.

Tatum went to Chaminade High School, which is in the Greater St. Louis region, after being born in the city. When he played collegiate basketball for Duke University in 2016–17, he moved out of the city.

In the 2017 NBA Draft, the Celtics selected Tatum with the third overall choice. He has developed into one of the league’s top players, and over the previous six seasons, he has guided the Celtics to four Eastern Conference finals.
