Wilt Chamberlain’s 1961–1962 season came in second on The Sporting News’ incredible list of the 50 greatest seasons in sports history, which was published at the end of 2021.
The whole list of the top 50 seasons can be seen here, but let’s focus on one particular historic season that had all the makings of the most dominant single year in sports history.
For those (like myself) who were too young to witness Chamberlain’s playing career, he has taken on the mythological qualities of a legendary figure. Every time a modern-day NBA player accomplishes something seemingly impossible, we’re frequently reminded of his absurdity by hearing that they have joined Chamberlain and, occasionally, an elite shortlist of other Hall of Famers who have also accomplished whatever the achievement was.
His 1961–62 campaign saw many record-breaking performances, some of which are probably never going to be topped.
Let’s look at some of those absurd, unbreakable records from what was unquestionably Chamberlain’s most unstoppable year ever.
