Serbia’s Petrovic secures a spot in the Euros
The Serbian team that qualified for Euro 2024, making their debut in the competition, included Djordje Petrovic, and the country’s four goals came from a Chelsea striker on loan.
Serbia will compete in the European Championship for the first time as an independent country in 2024, having previously participated in the competition as a member of Yugoslavia in 2000. They qualified for the tournament by finishing second in Group G in their last game.
Djordje Petrovic, a young goalkeeper for Chelsea, has only played in two senior international matches during Euro qualifying, but he has been a regular substitute and was again on the bench for Sunday afternoon’s pivotal match at home against Bulgaria.
They knew that a point would be sufficient to qualify regardless of the outcome, and when they took the lead in the first half, everything appeared to be going well. But ten minutes after the interval, they fell behind to two goals from Bulgaria before an equalizer in the 82nd minute guaranteed them a spot at Euro 2024.
Now, Petrovic will aim to be a member of the Serbian team that competes in a European Championship for the first time in Germany the following summer, where they will face Belgium, who had already qualified prior to this last round of matches.
In their most recent home match against Azerbaijan, Romelu Lukaku captained Belgium and played only the first half, but that was enough time for him to score four goals as they easily won 5-0.
This season, the striker, who is on loan at Roma, scored his 80th goal for his nation with a header in the first goal. Azerbaijan was down to 10 men after Eddy was booked twice in the next four minutes. The striker added another goal on 26 minutes.
After half an hour, Lukaku scored another header to complete his hat-trick, and he added a fourth on the counter just before halftime. By the time he was replaced, the victory Belgium needed to top Group F appeared certain.
