Roy Keane discusses the mental health problems that result from participating in sports.

Alongside Ronnie O’Sullivan, Roy Keane discussed mental health issues resulting from pressure in Gary Neville’s most recent Overlap episode.

Ronnie O’Sullivan discussed his new documentary with Ian Wright, Roy Keane, Jamie Carragher, Gary Neville, and Overlap’s “Stick to Football” podcast.

O’Sullivan went into great detail about his battles with mental health and how pressure used to affect his performance on the field.

We are able to relate to the O’Sullivan documentary because of this. The expectation you have of oneself,” Keane said.

You put a lot of strain on yourself, which can lead to serious illness. If you’re not eating well, this can have further consequences.

“We talk about mental health, yeah, people turn to drink, gambling, drugs, women whatever it can be. I think a lot of top-level sports people have got them flaws.

It is about accepting it obviously and trying to manage it but also that’s part of your DNA and your personality.”

Keane also went on to say even when you retire self-pressure never really ends no matter how you spend your time.

“But, again, you on about there, knocking yourself for the stuff you put yourself under but you also have to take it easy on yourself that’s just part of life isn’t it?” he added.
