Recalling the amazing occasion when Larry Bird mostly used his left hand to play a game.
One of the best basketball players of all time is Larry Bird. In addition, he is among the best trash talkers of all time.
He also enjoyed having a great time while doing it.
Similar to when, 33 years ago today, he informed the media before facing the Trail Blazers in Portland that he planned to use his left hand, or off hand, to score the majority of his points that evening in order to save his right hand for the Los Angeles Lakers, the team the Celtics would be playing next on their 1986 road trip.
Against Portland, he finished with a triple double and 47 points.
From NBA.com:
Bird made the decision to play much of the game against the Blazers with his off-hand left hand, two nights before a game against the rival Los Angeles Lakers. His explanation for why? My right hand is being reserved for the Lakers.
Bird finished the game with 47 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists. He made 10 of his 21 field goals with his left hand versus Portland. The final score in overtime was 120–119 for the Celtics.
Two nights later, in the Celtics’ 105-99 victory over the Lakers in Los Angeles, Bird ended with 22 points, 18 rebounds, and seven assists.
