The position that had the power to drastically alter Larry Bird’s life.
Great athletes’ careers don’t always get off to a fantastic start or accurately forecast what might occur in the future, and basketball is no exception. Larry Bird is one of the examples of this that we brought up; he spent his boyhood away from the court and the ball, and his life was about to take a radical turn.
Due to his exceptional performance in high school, Bird attracted the attention of numerous universities who were interested in hiring him. Larry went on to play for the Indiana Hoosiers, but things did not work out as he had hoped. Due to some difficulties during the summer games and his parents’ separation, he was only at Indiana University for 24 days before resigning and leaving without saying anything to his parents.
He went back to French Lick with the intention of continuing his education at the university; he registered in a nearby institution, but once more he only lasted for a short while before leaving. At that moment, Bird decided he was done with basketball and began working, as he later revealed in an interview.
How did Larry behave? He began his career in his city’s Streets Department. “I assumed he would work as a concrete pourer in the construction industry. While he hadn’t excelled in shop in school, he had experience in construction. In terms of basketball, Bird stated in a 2015 interview with Indianapolis Monthly, “I just wanted to be the best player on my high school team.”
Soon after, Bird decided to give basketball another go. He reenrolled in college and informed his friends, “I’m going down there to get a little education,” before he resigned his job as a garbage truck driver. After that, I’ll return and take over as your employer.
Larry Bird’s career did not begin as planned, but his unexpected father’s suicide death made him cling to basketball even more. That was how he overcame and moved past the hurt brought on by his mother’s passing.
