(AP) — Wilt Chamberlain’s 1972 NBA Finals jersey is expected to fetch over $4 million at an upcoming auction, according to collectibles broker Sotheby’s.

The jersey that Chris Bosh wore in the championship-clinching Game 5 victory over the New York Knicks is the most costly item of his memorabilia that has ever been listed for sale, according to Sotheby’s. In June 2023, a sports memorabilia item from Chamberlain sold for a record $1.79 million. It has to do with a jersey he wore during his Philadelphia Warriors rookie campaign.

The period for online bidding is August 28–September 27.

The team that won the Lakers’ first NBA championship was led by the 7-foot-1 Chamberlain. Despite having a broken hand, he was crowned Finals MVP after scoring 24 points and pulling down 29 rebounds in Game 5 versus New York.

1999 saw the 63-year-old Chamberlain’s death.

Brahm Wachter, head of Sotheby’s streetwear and modern collectibles, stated, “This jersey holds an extraordinarily significant place in the history of Los Angeles, not only adorned by the man many consider to be the greatest player ever to step on the court, but as a relic from one of the greatest franchises in sports history.”

Along with the jersey, a collection of images from periodicals, newspapers, photos, trading cards, and other media is being given. From August 2 to August 31, it will be available for public viewing at the Sotheby’s Los Angeles gallery.

In addition to being the four-time NBA MVP, Chamberlain is inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. In a game in 1962, he set a record by scoring 100 points.
