Owner of the Suns Mat Ishbia is prepared to go above and beyond to win a championship.
Mat Ishbia, the owner of the Phoenix Suns, is poised for another major swing come NBA trade deadline.
Along with forward David Roddy, Ishbia added an immediate impact player in Royce O’Neale after acquiring superstar Kevin Durant the previous season.
But Ishbia had to take on more financial obligations as a result of those additions. The addition of O’Neale and Roddy increased the team’s salary and luxury tax liability by an additional $20 million, according to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports.
For Ishbia, it was just another workday at the office; she is determined to do “whatever it takes to win,” no matter the financial consequences.
“I have always been a fan and I still am. The owner said to Arizona Sports’ Bickley & Marotta on Friday, “No one cares about the money I spend, and no fan cares about my luxury tax bill.” “Winning is important to them. I also just give a damn about that. whatever it takes to come out on top. Here in Phoenix, we believe that the basketball teams, the Mercury and the Suns, must give it their all. That is our plan of action. Trying to win a championship means going above and beyond. We will work together to solve it.
“We find ways to improve our team, and we bring in Royce and David Roddy as well,” Ishbia continued. “Our goal is to compete at the greatest level possible. The West is an extremely harsh place. There are many excellent clubs in the NBA, so we felt that improving by the deadline was crucial.
It’s also unlikely that Ishbia will adopt a different mindset.
He knows the Suns won’t be able to win a championship every year, but it won’t stop him from offering the finest product available.
It’s a championship; it’s not a championship or bust. We’re attempting to do that, Ishbia stated. Every year, we plan to strive for a championship. I’ll be getting to know you for a very long time. I won’t just sit here and say, “We’re going to plan to do this in five years.” We’re going to strive to win this year and the following year, so don’t get too enthusiastic about my draft choices in five years.
“We’re trying to win a championship right now, and we’re going to do everything in our power to do it,” said every player in that locker room and every member of the Phoenix Suns and Mercury staff. I hope that from (their) standpoint as well, they perceive the owner acting in that way.
Ishbia didn’t stop trying to open his wallet on the court.
The owner, who took over from former owner Robert Sarver in 2020, announced plans to start a new G League franchise just last week. Phoenix had previously parted ways with its previous team. As of right now, the Suns are the only NBA team without a G League affiliate.
