Nobody other resembled the legendary Boston Celtics player Larry Bird. Or perhaps there was. Bird was unique; he had won three NBA titles and three MVP awards in a row. He was stunned the moment he saw the object that most resembled him in 1988.
When Red Auerbach was negotiating a rookie deal with Bird, he was either bluffing or he had no real idea how good the future Hall of Famer was. The former president of the Celtics called Bird a “cornerman” during the talks and stated that he wasn’t ready to give him the biggest salary of any rookie.
According to Sports Illustrated, Auerbach stated during talks with Bird’s agent Bob Woolf that a cornerback cannot control the game. A large man, sometimes even a bodyguard. However, a franchise cannot be saved by one individual playing a corner.
Eventually, Auerbach caved and made a big fuss for the youngster. Bird led the Celtics to three titles in the 1980s, undoubtedly turning the club around.
