One of the NBA’s biggest talents right now is Luka Doncic, and some fans have already started comparing him to Larry Bird. Of course, some have taken issue with that comparison, especially from the legend’s colleagues and teammates. When Michael Cooper entered the conversation, he explained why Doncic is still a few steps behind his old competitor. Coop responded, “No, I don’t see that,” when questioned about the analogy. “Not just yet. First things first, that person has to win titles. He can have a little shorter appearance than Bird. He might possess Bird’s level of tenacity. However, he is far from possessing Larry Bird’s skill of deception on the court. The man can really make some shots. But first, take home a few titles. Win one, and then we can begin to discuss.

sculpting his own path Even though it can be gratifying, most current players would probably prefer to forge their own path rather than be named alongside the sport’s all-time greats. Furthermore, it would be hard to emulate Larry Legend because he is a unique individual. Therefore, maybe people should stay away from the comparison and pay attention to people like Cooper, Byron Scott, and Dominique Wilkins.

On the other hand, in his third season, Bird managed to lead the Celtics to a championship. That year, though, was very different for the Hall of Famer because he got a lot of assistance. Cedric Maxwell was chosen the winner of the Finals MVP award; he did not receive the honor. Luka may require additional assistance compared to other years in order to have a strong chance of vying for the Larry O’Brien Trophy. The Mavs don’t need to pursue superstars in order to pursue rings, though. The franchise already has the formula down pat, having won the 2011 championship by assembling a strong supporting group around Dirk Nowitzki.
