Luis Diaz’s parents arrive on Merseyside for Christmas following a charter flight from Liverpool.
Following their recent experience with kidnapping, Liverpool has flown Luis Diaz’s parents to Merseyside so they can celebrate Christmas with their son.
After being kidnapped by the guerrilla group National Liberation Army earlier this month, Cilenis Marulanda was released almost immediately, but father Luis Manuel was detained for 12 days before being freed late last week.
When Diaz returned to Colombia for international duty, his parents were there to witness their son’s two goals in an emotional 2-1 victory over Brazil at home on Thursday.
According to the PA news agency, after the match, Liverpool rented a private jet to transport Diaz’s parents and extended family to Merseyside so they could spend more time together. This was done for security purposes as well as to help the family deal with their trauma.
Early on Saturday morning, their aircraft was supposed to touch down at Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport.

After their match in Paraguay on Tuesday, Diaz will return from his international duty and reunite with his family in Liverpool.
He will be traveling in a plane that several Premier League clubs jointly chartered in order to get their players back home as quickly as possible, along with the other South American players of the team, Darwin Nunez, Alexis Mac Allister, and Alisson Becker, who was defeated twice by his teammate in their match in Barranquilla, in the far north of Colombia.
Next Saturday lunchtime, Liverpool will travel to Manchester City for a top-of-the-table match at the Etihad Stadium.
