Livingston 0-2 Rangers: The Gers win thanks to….
Rangers defeated struggling Livingston 2-0 on Sunday, maintaining their positive start under Philippe Clement despite James Tavernier missing a penalty and scoring another.
The Ibrox men took the lead in the first half through a goal from Cyriel Dessers, who had already scored six goals this season. Later in the half, Tavernier, who had earlier missed a 12-yard attempt, sealed the victory with a spot-kick.
Now that Clement took over for Michael Beale last month, he has managed seven games without a loss, six of which have resulted in wins.
David Martindale, the manager of Livi, made five changes to the squad that lost 1-0 to Dundee on Sunday after his team’s four straight losses had left them bottom of the table before the visit of the winning Ibrox team.
Shamal George, Cristian Montano, Mo Sangare, Bruce Anderson, and Luiyi de Lucas replaced goalkeeper Jack Hamilton, Miles Welch-Hayes, Jason Holt, Danny Lloyd, and Stephen Kelly.
In preparation for the journey to West Lothian, Clement made four changes to the starting lineup from Thursday night’s 2-1 Europa League victory over Sparta Prague at home.
Leon Balogun, Dessers, Tom Lawrence, and Ross McCausland—who received his first Gers start—replaced Ben Davies, Todd Cantwell, Sam Lammers, and Danilo.
The Ibrox team had a strong start and appeared to have taken the lead in the sixteenth minute when Connor Goldson put the ball in the net from close range.
Dessers darted in at the near post and attempted to get a touch on Tavernier’s inswinging free-kick, but it was determined that he was offside and interfering with play. As a result, the goal was disallowed after a VAR check. The ball was then pushed out to Balogun, who nodded it into the path of fellow center-back Goldson, by the caught off guard Livi keeper George.
Three minutes later, Rangers produced a good opening with a quick counterattack, but McCausland missed the target after latching onto a pass from Lawrence.
Midway through the first half, the 20-year-old winger’s speed caused more problems for the Lions as he won a penalty after George brought him down while he was attempting to run on to a Tavernier pass.
However, Tavernier missed the left-hand post of the goalkeeper with his spot kick.
Rangers had been dominating play and took the lead in the 26th minute thanks to a wonderful pass from Lawrence that allowed Nigerian forward Dessers to elude Sean Kelly and put the ball behind George.
Just before halftime, McCausland thought he had scored his first senior goal for Rangers when he fired the ball high into the net, but Abdallah Sima’s foul disallowed the goal.
After the interval, Rangers maintained their dominance, but they were unable to generate many clear-cut opportunities, and it took them until the 74th minute to defeat their opponents.
After a VAR check, it was determined that Michael Devlin’s arm was struck by the ball as he was attempting to defend a Borna Barisic cross from the left while challenging Danilo and Sima, two Rangers forwards, in the air.
This time, Tavernier tucked the ball right of the defenseless George without making a mistake as the Rangers maintained their impressive start to Clement’s rule, leaving Livi bottom of the table based on Ross County’s goal differential.
