NBA dominance was how Michael Jordan and Larry Bird made their living. In their Hall of Fame careers, the two won a combined nine titles and eight MVP awards. They will always be remembered as two of the best players in history.

Despite their respective accomplishments, Jordan and Bird were not seen in the same light. Bird was characterized as analytical and slow, whereas Jordan was the showy, high-scoring dunker. When it comes to ranking among the NBA’s all-time great players, Jordan is a lock. For many, he is the greatest of all time. It’s not necessarily a given that Bird will make that list, unless Jordan is the one creating it. Bird’s ranking among the best five players of all time was once explained by the former Bulls star.

When Larry Bird and Magic Johnson joined the NBA for the 1979–80 season following their historic matchup in the 1979 NCAA men’s championship game, the league received much-needed support in the early 1980s.
