Kevin Pritchard succeeds Larry Bird as president of the Pacers after Bird’s resignation.
Sam Amick of USA TODAY Sports has confirmed that Larry Bird has resigned from his position as president of the Indiana Pacers. This information was obtained from a person with knowledge of the matter but who was not permitted to discuss it in public.
Since 2003, Bird, a legendary player with the Boston Celtics, has been the team president. Bird’s successor as president of basketball operations will be Kevin Pritchard. Bird will continue to serve as a consultant with the Pacers.
Bird had been the head coach of the Pacers for the first three of his twenty years there. The 2012 NBA Executive of the Year was Bird, 60.
Bird has been trying to sign Paul George, the standout player for the Pacers, to an extension for months. George has been hesitant to commit long-term to the Pacers, who were swept out of the first round by the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday. His contract expires at the end of the following season. In Pacers history, it was the first seven-game series sweep.
I always want to be a part of a successful team, as I told Larry,” George stated earlier this year on ESPN Radio. “Playing the game only for the sake of metrics, numbers, or self-promotion is annoying. Man, I wish I could compete for a championship.
Bird is no longer need to decide whether to trade George during the course of the following several months in the event that George is dissatisfied with the Pacers’ summer actions.
