Kevin McHale explained why Larry Bird was the greatest player of all time, surpassing even Michael Jordan.
Kevin McHale isn’t convinced that Michael Jordan is the greatest player of all time.
The majority of NBA fans believe that Michael Jordan is the undeniable GOAT, despite the fact that the league has produced a number of outstanding players over its illustrious history. However, we occasionally hear different viewpoints, particularly from players who were around while Jordan was playing and witnessed other players match up with him.
McHale argues in favor of Bird’s greatness.
One of the players that is rarely discussed while discussing the greatest players of all time is Boston superstar Larry Bird. But that’s why, in a classic clip, Larry Bird’s teammate and all-around great player, Kevin McHale, explained what made Bird the greatest player of all time.
It was his time. But let me tell you, he had an incredible run. Whatever you want to say about the man, while he was on the field, he had a tremendous run. He was the best player I’ve ever watched, played against, or played with. People jump all over Michael Jordan these days; he’s capable of doing a lot of things, but in the final seconds, Larry was, in my opinion, the best.”

Bird is undoubtedly on the NBA Mount Rushmore
Upon examining their respective careers and honor totals, it is evident that Jordan is the superior. However, a meaningful discussion about comparing the two at their heights is possible. Naturally, everyone is aware of what an athletic marvel Michael Jordan was—a player with no weaknesses thanks to his relentless work ethic. However, Bird has the upper hand over Jordan when it comes to pure basketball skill and intelligence.
Although Bird’s ability to do anything with the ball allowed him to become one of the best, Larry was not like as natural an athlete as Michael Jordan was. shooting, dribbling, rebounding, playing in the post, and—above all—clinching game victories for the Celtics when it matters most. Although McHale may have a biased opinion because he played with Larry during his prime, it doesn’t change the fact that Bird’s name needs to be among the greatest in order to succeed.
