well-known athletes Both Jamie Carragher and Ronnie O’Sullivan have seen great success in their respective sports careers—snooker and football, respectively.
Using the same sports psychiatrist as snooker great Ronnie O’Sullivan during his playing career, Jamie Carragher has said.
Carragher played professional football with Liverpool his whole career. He currently pundits for Sky Sports. In the most recent Stick to Football podcast episode, the former defender talked about his mental health with special guest O’Sullivan.
Alongside Carragher, Ian Wright, Gary Neville, and Roy Keane, O’Sullivan shared a lot of information about his career in snooker. The Rocket, who has won the World Snooker Championship an incredible seven times, is considered one of the most brilliant athletes in his sport.
O’Sullivan disclosed that he spoke with Dr. Steve Peters, a sports psychiatrist who was employed by Liverpool, during that conversation. Regaining his form and winning back-to-back world titles in 2012 and 2013, Dr Peters—best renowned for his work with British Cycling—assisted O’Sullivan in achieving success.
“I needed to have him there in my dressing room the entire first year we worked together,” O’Sullivan said to Stick to Football. “After that, I was OK. We spent a lot of time talking on the phone since I didn’t want to monopolize his time. He assured me that it would not matter in the slightest if I was not ready to complete the assignment.
“The biggest part was understanding why I used to discard matches without thinking twice. I was searching for the escape door because I couldn’t handle playing poorly, even if I pretended not to care. I now grind it out when I play poorly.
I win a lot of matches when I’m probably not the stronger player because of the increased resilience in my game. I also win matches that I may have lost before Steve Peters. With Steve, it was truly about getting through those times, and he allowed me to reach my full potential.”
Carragher went on to describe how Dr. Peters assisted him. “When I chatted with Dr. Steve Peters, who worked at Liverpool for a while toward the end of my career, I realized that playing football does have an impact on one’s mental wellbeing,” the man stated.
