In 2024–2025, the Phoenix Suns will become the 32nd team in the G League history, since they have chosen to start their own franchise.
The first time all 30 NBA teams will have an associate in the minor league system will be in 2024–25 when the Phoenix Suns introduce an NBA G League team.
The 2001-founded G League will grow to a record-breaking 32 teams. A development squad for elite NBA prospects based in Nevada, the G League Ignite, and the unaffiliated Capitanes of Mexico City are among them.
One of Suns and Phoenix Mercury (WNBA) owner Mat Ishbia’s top goals as an owner was “bringing a G League team to Phoenix.”
“Having a G League squad adds another level of competition for us to strive for excellence and will be an essential resource for coaching and player development. Our G League team will contribute to the community and have a positive influence both on and off the court, much like the Suns and Mercury.”
The Suns are accepting entries for their online team-naming contest through February 28. The campaign was launched on Wednesday. The team’s home games will take place in the Phoenix Metropolitan area; the precise site will be revealed in the spring.
NBA G League President Shareef Abdur-Rahim said, “We are thrilled to achieve our long-stated goal that each of the 30 NBA teams has an NBA G League affiliate. We are honored to welcome Mat Ishbia and the Phoenix Suns to the NBA G League.”
“With the Suns’ commitment, the NBA G League has never been more valuable to NBA teams than it is right now. I am eager to experience the distinctive flavor of NBA G League basketball with supporters in the Valley come next season.
