Maria Sharapova, a seasoned player with five Grand Slam victories under her belt, had a challenging start to her tennis career. It is well known that when she was seven years old, her mother stayed in Russia and they traveled to the United States with her father.

She spoke candidly about the difficulties she had transitioning to life in a foreign nation without her mother, saying, “I used to be really lonely. I really missed my mom. My father was also unable to see me because he was working as much as possible. After two years, her mother finally came to join her. Sharapova was already able to take care of herself by that point.

“I learned how to take care of myself. I never thought about quitting because I knew what I wanted. When you come from nothing and you have nothing, it makes you very hungry and determined,” she said.
