Former Pittsburgh Steelers players who might return to the city in 2024
Last summer, I wrote a piece quite similar to this one in which I mentioned how many former Steelers will not be wearing the black and gold again in 2023. I find myself revisiting the idea this summer, but from a different angle, since the Steelers may be able to add depth with a few of the players slated to become free agents.
Even if the majority of these are still highly unlikely to occur, it’s still interesting to see whether any former players could assist the present ones.
The former Pittsburgh Steelers first-round selection from 2018 decided to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles in the summer in search of better opportunities. Throughout the season, Edmunds was traded by the Eagles to the Tennessee Titans, where his skill set was more evident.
In nine games with the Titans, Edmunds would have a career-high 2.5 sacks in addition to one pass breakup. In addition, he had two quarterback hits and two tackles for loss.
Edmunds makes sense for the Steelers because of his experience and age, especially with a defense that is thin in the secondary heading into the offseason. Despite having contracts, Edmunds’ replacements, Keanu Neal and Damontae Kazee, might not play again. Neal’s lengthy injury history casts doubt on his availability, while Kazee, who turns 31 in June, has the potential to save the Steelers $3 million if he is released.
Edmunds had previously signed contracts worth $2.5 and $2 million with Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, respectively.
