Brown’s highlight play also happily surprised the Celtics bench.

Jaylen Brown has made several impressive moves during games over his eight-year career. He added one to the list Friday night that might have been his most impressive one yet.

In the early minutes of the fourth in the Celtics’ win over the Mavericks, Brown faced a tough contest from Dallas center Dereck Lively II in front of the basket. As Lively went straight up to contest Brown’s shot, the Celtics star spun around, doing 360, and made a left-handed layup off the backboard.

With just one more basket in a 72-point second half for Boston, the basket gave the Celtics a 104-92 lead. However, it was an early catalyst for the Celtics’ victory, as Brown’s teammates expressed their admiration from the bench.

Though he wasn’t sure why he opted for a full 360 layup, Brown—who frequently converted opponent dunk attempts at the rim into dunk contests—found out he could pull it off.

Brown said to reporters, “I don’t know what drove me to do that.” It’s still a puzzler. It would have looked awful if I had missed it. You had a split second, a little additional time to decide, when you had the ability to jump and some hangtime. I still had a little time.

Of the 11 shots Brown made on Friday night, he made the most difficult one—making 11 out of 20 from the field to score 25 points. On the subsequent possession, however, Brown produced yet another spectacular moment, sinking a 28-foot stepback 3-pointer that proved to be his game-winning shot and gave the Celtics their biggest lead of the game.

But following the game, Brown’s spinning layup remained the center of attention. With the exception of Brown’s highlight shot, Xavier Tillman, who saw his first sustained run in a game since the Celtics traded for him in early February, claimed that Friday’s game went as planned.

Other than JB’s 360 layup, there are no surprises, Tillman informed reporters. “I thought to myself in the corner, ‘This guy is crazy.'” Other than that, nothing unexpected.

Kristaps Porzingis said that Brown’s layup was an on-brad play, indicating that he agreed with Tillman’s assessment and the bench’s response. Brown is a prominent player for the Celtics.

“There are times when you feel like you’re holding your breath,” Porzingis said to NBC Sports Boston about JB. How about, what’s he doing? What will this be? That was the case with this instance. This is a JB play; it fires it while going up and 360 degrees.
