On this day in history, Michael Jordan defeats the Celtics in the playoffs with 63 points.
Today, exactly 25 years ago, MJ destroyed the Celtics in a playoff match that will never be forgotten.
The greatest individual scoring performances in NBA history are easily remembered when considering Wilt Chamberlain’s 100 points in 1962 and Kobe Bryant’s 81 points in 2006. When it comes to all-time playoff performances, though, Michael Jordan’s 63 in the Boston Garden has held the top spot since 1986. Today, 25 years ago, MJ destroyed the Celtics in a playoff game that will never be forgotten.
In a thrilling double-overtime game, Michael carried the Bulls on his back despite being outmatched and shorthanded (Carmelo last night, anyone?). The Celtics ended up winning the championship. Regretfully, Michael’s 63 weren’t enough on that particular night, just like Melo. Although the Bulls lost 135–131, the basketball community believed that the “Jordan Kid” would eventually take over as the league’s greatest player. The legendary Celtics forward Larry Bird said, “He is the most exciting, awesome player in the game today,” in response to a question regarding Michael’s performance. I believe that God is simply wearing a Michael Jordan mask.”
