Breaking News;’Aggressive’ remarks are made by Ronnie O’Sullivan to John Higgins.
Following his withdrawal from his home Open, Scottish snooker player John Higgins received some advise from Ronnie O’Sullivan.
After losing the Scottish Open, Ronnie O’Sullivan urged that John Higgins should play a more “aggressive” style. After dropping the last five sets of the match, Higgins was beaten 6-3 by Noppon Saengkham, ending his hopes of winning his first rankings championship since early 2021. Higgins had advanced to the semi-finals in Edinburgh.
A lot of people have criticized Higgins for his poor performance in recent years, including O’Sullivan, who once urged the Wizard of Wishaw to get better and be able to grind out victories even when he is not playing at his best.
O’Sullivan counseled his fellow Class of 92 member to play more aggressively when Higgins suddenly faltered while leading Saengkham 3-1.
“I would probably advise John to be a little more aggressive,” O’Sullivan said to Eurosport. “I believe that finding a high gear is necessary to win matches at this level right now.” John is really solid, but at this point, I’m not sure if solid is good enough.
“I believe he needs to step outside the box a little bit more. He is such a talented player that I believe he would terrify more people if he played with the aggression that Noppon did. John is an expert in his field, so it’s difficult to give him advice. However, from my observation, he could attempt pushing the envelope if he truly wanted to.
Nobody enjoys playing someone who is always approaching them at 100 mph. You may become comfortable in a match when someone backs off a little, and John needs to resist allowing others to become at ease against him. John simply wants to win, and I believe that keeping going is the greatest way for him to achieve so.
In Edinburgh, O’Sullivan has already requested that Higgins work on that aspect of his game, but the Scot acknowledged that the recent UK Championship winner’s high expectations for seasoned players are feeding criticism of him.
Higgins answered, “I know, it’s just that we’re in the era that you’re playing in.” “I’m being evaluated based on the fact that you are clearly still winning the major tournaments. People might think it’s a tremendous feat if he (O’Sullivan) were no longer alive and I were still performing at this level at the age of 48, but you’re up against this person and in the same age group—a one-off. Though challenging, I am content since I believe that I am doing well for who I am.
