Marcos Leonardo is wanted by Newcastle United, but the wonderkid from Santos has been advised against joining a “small club” like the Magpies.
Wonderkid Marcos Leonardo is being advised by Santos presidential candidate Ricardo Agostinho to hold off on moving to Newcastle United.
In January, given the recent concerns about Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson’s injuries, the Magpies might be looking to add another attacker.
Serhou Guirassy, a striker for Stuttgart, is reportedly a top target, but Newcastle may choose a different course of action.
Marcos Leonardo advised against moving against Newcastle United
October saw a report from the Brazilian news outlet UOL Esporte stating that Newcastle had made an initial attempt to sign Santos player Marcos Leonardo.
There was talk that Newcastle had established “first contacts” in relation to a possible transfer of Leonardo to St James’ Park.
According to the report, Leonardo was backed for a huge future, and Santos were looking for a deal worth about €25 million (£22 million).
The 20-year-old has already participated in 167 Santos games, scoring 54 goals and providing 11 assists.
Tim Vickery, a South American football expert, has drawn comparisons between him and Sergio Aguero, so Newcastle fans should expect an exciting trade.
Ricardo Agostinho, who is vying to become the next president of Santos later this week, has cautioned Leonardo against relocating to Tyneside.
Agostinho stated in a statement to Diario do Litoral that he feels Leonardo needs to sign with a team that is on the same level as Santos, citing Real Madrid, Barcelona, and AC Milan as examples.
Agostinho believes that joining Newcastle, a “small team,” “doesn’t make sense,” placing them in the same league as Braga and Almeria.
The plan is to either lock Leonardo down to a new contract that includes incentives for future salary increases, or to let him go to a “top team,” which Agostinho doesn’t think includes Newcastle.
Agostinho responded, “Oh, no, without a doubt,” when asked if Leonardo could sign with a different Brazilian team. Our position is that he has two options: either he and we agree on this contract model with these triggers, or he chooses to play for a top European team. Furthermore, it defies logic for him to play for Newcastle or any other similar team, let alone for a small squad. With teams as big as these, we need an athlete who is focused and understands that Santos is the peak of his career.
He must compete for the same teams as Santos at Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Milan. If not, he won’t benefit much from it and his financial situation won’t change much because we have plans that, should he put in the work and dedicate himself, will bring in a sizable sum of money that will greatly benefit the club,” he continued.
Supporters of Newcastle will undoubtedly disagree because their team, along with Real, Barcelona, and group rivals Milan, is in the Champions League.
Eddie Howe is leading the Magpies to success, and at the moment, they present a more appealing option than Almeria or Braga.
Agostinho needs to promote Santos in his presidential campaign, but his remarks might just aggravate or.
