The Boston Celtics want to return the 2029 All-Star game to its original location.

In 2029, the Boston Celtics would like to host All-Star weekend. In an interview with Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe, team president Rich Gotham stated that the team has had initial talks with the league office. Although the first celebrations for the All-Star weekend were held in Boston in 1951, the city has not hosted an All-Star weekend since 1964.

Should Boston be approved as the 2029 All-Star weekend host, it will be the first time in 67 years. For most Celtics fans, it will be the first time the city has held the festivities within their lifetime.

“We’ve had those conversations with both the NBA and the city of Boston and a lot of different constituencies, including TD Garden and Meet Boston,” Gotham told The Globe. “We’ve had some preliminary conversations, and there’s enthusiasm from all the parties to bring the game to Boston. We’re working at it.”

Over the years, the All-Star game has grown in both stature and popularity. It garners global attention. It generates a surge in tourism.

Above all, though, it offers the city a plethora of commercial and economic prospects, not only for the weekend but also in the years leading up to the event. Naturally, a large-scale event like this calls for excellent city infrastructure.

Gotham feels confident that the recent redevelopments in Boston have given the Celtics a strong chance of succeeding with their bid.

Gaining the right to host the All-Star game is no simple task. The majority of the league’s teams are probably interested in hosting the star-studded weekend on their home court. But there shouldn’t be any doubt about Boston’s capacity to plan and direct a significant city-wide event, considering the city’s current standing as a powerhouse in the Eastern Conference and the notable recent successes of the Bruins and Patriots.

It’s unlikely that Boston will announce its proposal very soon. But the All-Star Game should have returned to the city long ago. With any luck, the Celtics’ recent success will help bring an end to a more than 50-year break.
