In the first quarter of their 130-126 overtime victory over the Detroit Pistons in their preseason opener on Sunday afternoon at Little Caesars Arena, the Phoenix Suns appeared to have the greatest offensive unit in the NBA.
The Suns outscored the Pistons, who are led by former Suns coach Monty Williams, 46 points thanks to the play of their big three, Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal. With a scorching 17 of 20 field goal shooting performance, Phoenix led all scorers with 10 points off 3-of-3 shooting from Durant. Beal scored seven points on two of three shots, while Booker scored nine points on four of six shots.
Just a taste of our offensive potential, Suns coach Frank Vogel remarked following the contest. “Undoubtedly, the firepower we possess with those men who all seem to click and feel at ease in our system appears fantastic on paper. Even though our offensive was great, I was more pleased by our defensive team’s attention to detail. Additionally, we were able to establish a strong attacking rhythm since we were guarding. Most of the time, neither the ball nor the fouls were being committed by us. And we’ll be difficult to beat once we find an offensive rhythm similar to what we did in the first quarter.
Durant and Booker both scored twelve points in the Suns’ opening game of the preseason. Booker contributed two assists, and Durant grabbed three rebounds. On 3-of-5 shooting (4-of-4 from the free-throw line), Beal, making his Suns debut, finished with 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists.
