ATP Rankings (20/05/24): Wawrinka approaches the top 100 exit, while Chileans rise..
Following two weeks of competition, which included the Italian Open, there have been some significant changes in the ATP rankings, which are becoming more significant than ever in advance of the Olympics in Paris. After defeating Nicolas Jarry in the Italian Open championship match, Alexander Zverev won the greatest title of his career in Rome, having previously won the ATP Finals in 2021.
Consequently, the German has surpassed Daniil Medvedev to become the new world No. 4 and is expected to be among the favorites to win the Roland Garros championship. Big Movers Jerry became the first player from Chile to reach a Masters 1000 final since Fernando Gonzalez in 2007, and he was one of two players from his country to have a successful Italian Open. The 28-year-old achieved a new career-high rating of world No. 16 after losing in the championship match.
After making it to the semifinals in his first tournament appearance, Alejandro Tabilo emerged as the other Chilean winner in Rome. He has now risen seven ranks to a new career high of No. 25 and earned a seeding for his maiden Roland Garros main draw play.
Brazilian Thiago Monteiro is really the biggest upward mover inside the top 100, despite the fact that Jarry and Tabilo are two of the week’s notable tales. Monteiro qualified for the Italian Open after making it to the third round of the Madrid Open. There, he advanced to the last-16 stage, recording his best-ever Masters 1000 achievement. The 29-year-old moved up 22 ranks to No.84, placing him back inside the top 100.
Zhizhen Zhang defeated Monteiro in the fourth round to get to the quarterfinals, matching his best-ever Masters 1000 performance. The world No. 42 Chinese player, who had been struggling with form thus far in 2024, has jumped 14 ranks to return inside the top 50. While domestic players did not have a great Italian Open, 23-year-old Francesco Passaro made a breakthrough two weeks in. Passaro defeated Arthur Rinderknech and Tallon Griekspoor to earn his first victories at this level after qualifying for his local Masters 1000 event. After Nuno Borges eliminated him from the competition, Passaro went on to the Turin Challenger, where he advanced to the championship match and defeated top seed Lorenzo Musetti.
Passaro is now back inside the top 150, after climbing a colossal 107 places to world No.133.
Jack Draper (+5 to No.35), Nuno Borges (+7 to No.46), Luciano Darderi (+7 to No.47), Dan Evans (+7 to No.60), Luca Nardi (+11 to No.70), Yoshihito Nishioka (+8 to No.72), Jungcheng Shang (+16 to No.89), Alexandre Muller (+19 to No.90), Adam Walton (+16 to No.95), and Botic Van de Zandschulp (+12 to No.100) are some of the other notable movers this week. Not everyone has had a good few weeks; Borna Coric, who lost in the Italian Open’s first round, is still dropping in the rankings. The Croatian is currently placed at No. 71 after dropping an additional 16 spots and only winning two of his previous seven games. Stan Wawrinka, the three-time Grand Slam champion, has also declined.
Following his 14-ranking drop to No.131, Dominic Thiem, the 2020 US Open champion, has recently declared that he will retire from professional tennis later this year. As a result, he may need to rely on wildcards. The Austrian, a two-time finalist at Roland Garros, is currently attempting to qualify for a final participation in the competition after being denied a wildcard.
