Applications are being accepted for the Wilt Chamberlain Memorial Scholarship and Mentorship Program.
The Wilt Chamberlain Memorial Fund Scholarship and Mentorship Program announced today—the anniversary of Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game—that it would now be accepting applications from all high school seniors who want to continue their studies in the autumn of 2021. Applications are accepted through April 1, 2021, at wiltfund.org.
Recipients of the Wilt Chamberlain Memorial Scholarship and Mentorship Program are chosen on the basis of a variety of factors, such as their academic achievements, their need for financial assistance, and how well they embody Wilt Chamberlain’s values of perseverance and striving for excellence. This is one of Chamberlain’s greatest off-court legacies, a love of helping others.
One of Chamberlain’s six siblings, Barbara Lewis, remarked, “He was such a giving person, even when we were young.” Wilt was constantly concerned with making sure that people who didn’t have the same opportunities as an athlete received them were taken care of. Over his life, he gave dozens of charity his time, money, and star position.
A significant portion of the program is devoted to mentorship in the spirit of giving. Students’ areas of study, interests, and hobbies are taken into consideration when matching scholars with 76ers front office staff. 76ers mentors provide regular check-ins to help and encourage students as they make the move to college. The mentors offer guidance and assistance on a range of college-related issues, such as time management, seeking a job, social life, and academic support.
As a WCMF mentor, I’ve had an incredible experience. “I approached this experience with an open mind, but I was also very intentional about sharing my time and expertise with others,” stated Rob Nicholson, Senior Member Services Account Manager for the 76ers. But in the process, I have picked up a lot of knowledge from my mentee, Jalen. We share possibilities that benefit both of us, bounce ideas off one other, and support one another in our work. Witnessing someone you mentor develop into a prosperous young adult is an experience that cannot be described.
Witnessing someone you mentor develop into a prosperous young adult is an experience that cannot be described. Our bond will last long after Jalen graduates. I feel incredibly fortunate to be a part of this organization and this opportunity.Every candidate must be a resident of the Philadelphia region, intend to enroll in an accredited post-secondary institution starting in the autumn of 2021, and plan to graduate from high school at the end of the 2020–21 academic year. They must also exhibit a large unmet financial need and have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above.
