NEW YORK (AP) — When the team competition returns to Canada this year, Laver Cup captains John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg will be back in the role. From September 22–24, McEnroe will lead Team World against Borg’s Team Europe at Vancouver’s Rogers Arena. Felix Auger-Aliassime, a 22-year-old Montreal native who is ranked No. 9 in the ATP rankings, is the only player listed on either six-man team as of yet. His finest Grand Slam performance came from making it to the U.S. Open semifinals in 2021.

On September 3, the third day of the Laver Cup in London, Auger-Aliassime played a key role in the comeback as Team World defeated Team Europe after Team Europe had lost the first four editions of the competition. This was Roger Federer’s final match of the tournament, a doubles loss against longtime rival Rafael Nadal. After winning a doubles match with Jack Sock, Auger-Aliassime defeated Novak Djokovic in the singles encounter. Frances Tiafoe’s victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas sealed the victory.

Felix was last year’s MVP. In a Thursday video news conference, McEnroe stated, “He really turned the tide for us, big time.” It makes perfect sense to include Felix on the squad. I predict that he will win a major within the next year, or at most eighteen months. The Laver Cup, established by Federer’s management business, will begin selling ticket packages on March 3.
