“Some nights you don’t want to hear what he got to say,” Robert Parish said, contrasting Larry Bird’s leadership style with that of Michael Jordan.
“The Chief” liked Larry’s approach but recognized both Bird and MJ as leaders.
Robert Parish joined the Chicago Bulls for his final season after winning three NBA titles with the Boston Celtics alongside Larry Bird.
Later on, “The Chief” acknowledged that, having taken his skills to Chicago at the age of 43, he ought to have retired sooner. Parish did, however, wind up winning his fourth NBA championship despite playing a minimal role for the Bulls, participating in just 45 games during the regular season and two playoff series.
Robert loved his time in Chicago, especially having Michael Jordan as a teammate. The Hall of Famer claimed that, in terms of leadership, he still liked “The Hick from French Lick.”
Everybody has a different leadership style and mannerism. Michael challenged his colleagues and got right in your face. With the Celtics, Larry served as our leader and set a good example. Parish told NBC Sports, “You know, he wasn’t a vocal leader; he let his play dictate how we should play.”
“I believe that Larry’s leadership style and mindset produce the best players because, in the long run, players will tune you out and not listen to what you have to say if you are a yeller and screamer. Although I admire both leadership philosophies, I think Larry’s approach is superior. Because, you know, there are evenings when you just don’t want to hear what he had to say about Michael,” he continued.
