Danny Ainge Corrects Larry Bird’s Trash-Talking Statements.
Everybody has heard the tales of Larry Bird’s notorious trash-talking. The legendary Boston Celtics player is regarded by many as one of the best trash talkers in basketball history. Although Bird did occasionally engage in sarcastic conversations with his opponents, former teammate Danny Ainge has corrected the record regarding the conversation.
Danny Ainge, who spent eight seasons playing alongside Larry Bird in Boston, disputes the widespread belief that Bird was always talking trash. Speaking on the Knuckleheads Podcast, Ainge claimed that, contrary to common thought, Bird was never a constant trash talker and instead utilized his tongue to encourage himself.
In the podcast, Ainge stated, “Larry wasn’t a loud and obnoxious personality; he was a quiet guy.” However, he was quite humorous. He had personality.
It seems as though he was mostly using his trash talk as fuel. It wasn’t like he was just talking down to everyone all the time. When he completed it, it was large even if it was patchy.
The incident of Xavier McDaniel, who said, “I’m going to fake here, fake here, and shoot it there,” is well-known. He really followed through on his threat, and it was unrelated to the play call. A coach might declare a timeout and declare, “We’re going to do this.” As we stroll across the court, Bird gives me a “no” look. Just hand me the ball, please. Subsequently, he carries out the action he had promised McDaniel.
“All he really wanted was to inspire himself.”
Halfway through the third quarter, Larry had scored about 35 points on him. As he was sprinting back down the court, Larry exclaimed, “Man, you need to retire.”
The beginning of that story was “Dr. J went insane.”
Ainge said that Bird trash-talking coaches was the finest part.
“My most enjoyable instances of Larry’s trash-talking—and Kevin (McHale) was also quite skilled at it—were when they made fun of coaches, such as Hubie Brown,” Ainge remarked. Playing in Madison Square Garden, Bird is just putting the ball out in front of their bench when he says, ‘Hubie, this all you have for me tonight?’ to the entire bench, which can all hear him. Are you the only one who cannot watch after me?
