Ime Udoka will not be the next head coach of the Brooklyn Nets, as the team has come under fire for entertaining the suspension of the coach.

After it seemed likely that the Brooklyn Nets will hire the disgraced former Boston Celtics head coach, Ime Udoka, they have abandoned the suspended coach. After firing Steve Nash, the Nets appointed Jacque Vaughn as their new head coach.

The Celtics suspended Udoka for the entirety of the 2022–2023 NBA season after it was determined that he had engaged in an inappropriate personal connection with a female employee. At first, it was thought that the relationship was consensual.

Following the announcement of his suspension, Udoka expressed regret, and assistant coach Joe Mazzulla took over as acting head coach. As a rookie coach, Udoka made an impression, coaching Boston to the NBA Finals, where they were defeated by the Golden State Warriors in six games.

In his debut season as head coach, Udoka led Boston to a 51-31 record and was voted fourth for Coach of the Year. After stints with the San Antonio Spurs and Philadelphia 76ers, he previously worked as an assistant with the Nets under Nash for one season in 2020–21.

The Celtics said in September that Udoka’s suspension would stand until at least June 30, 2023, before it was reviewed. The 45-year-old is still bound to the Celtics by contract, but Boston was open to him leaving to take a position elsewhere, even with the division rival Nets.
