Even for Newcastle United, making the Europa League would be a “achievement.”
Newcastle United still has a chance to advance to the Champions League knockout stages.
Even if Eddie Howe’s team were to lose to Newcastle United in the Europa League this season, former Newcastle United defender Jose Enrique thinks it would still be a fantastic accomplishment.
The Magpies still have a chance to advance to the Champions League knockout stages, but they know they must defeat AC Milan and PSG in order to have any chance. Drawn into the group of death, the Toon’s odds were already stacked against them, but they led the group after winning four of their first two games.
The German team has risen to the top of the group after suffering back-to-back losses to Borussia Dortmund. The Magpies have dropped to fourth place, one point behind third-place AC Milan and two points behind.
“They can still make it out of the group. It’s going to be tough because they have probably the most difficult group in the Champions League this season,” Enrique said in an interview with Squawka.
“However, should they fail and qualify for the Europa League, they can compete there against other powerful teams such as Liverpool and similar outfits in an attempt to win it.
“Considering the other teams in the group, I believe it will still be enormous if they can place third and advance to the Europa League following the group. It’s incredible that they can even qualify for the Europa League; if they can, that’s another accomplishment in my opinion.”
