The NBA G League and the Phoenix Suns announced today that the Suns have obtained the rights to own and manage an NBA G League franchise. The team is scheduled to make its debut in the 2024–25 season.
“Bringing a G League team to Phoenix was one of my first priorities as owner,” said Mat Ishbia, the owner of the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury teams. “Having a G League team adds another level of competition for us to strive for excellence and will be an essential resource for coaching and player development.” Our G League team will contribute to the community and have a positive influence both on and off the court, much like the Suns and Mercury do.
The Phoenix metro region will host the home games of the Suns NBA G League squad. In the spring, the team’s name and logo, along with more information about the location, will be revealed.
Through a public competition, the Suns NBA G League squad will honor the 1968 Phoenix Suns roster. Through February 28th, fans can participate in an online contest at Suns.com/GLeague to name the NBA G League team.
The winner will get season tickets to the first season and $1,000.
The NAZ Suns, Phoenix’s previous affiliate, ceased operations in 2020 and relocated to Michigan to become the Motor City Cruise. Before moving, they turned down an invitation to the G League Bubble.
More information on the new affiliate team is expected to surface this spring, with its debut scheduled for the 2024–25 season.
