PHOENIX—James Martin, the coach of Grayson Allen at Jacksonville, Florida’s Providence School, remembers shaking hands with the Phoenix Suns player for the first time as a fifth grader.
“Maybe you’ve never shaken hands with him? Martin said, “He had the biggest hands for a kid.”
As it happened, Allen’s ambition matched the size of his elementary school paws.
Martin recalled that initial meeting: “He told me, Coach, I want to play at Duke.” “Can you picture my expression when he said that?” However, you are aware of my response?
Now let’s get to work.
Allen has never shied away from a challenge, and his road from Jacksonville to Phoenix, where he is now the fifth starter in a star-studded Suns team, has been paved with hard work.
This group, which consists of Allen, center Jusuf Nurkić, and the team’s “Big Three” of Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal, has a +15.6 net rating in the 16 games those starters have played together.
Allen and Martin were determined to play at Duke, even if it meant sacrificing anything along the way.
Martin remarked, “People wouldn’t even believe,” characterizing Allen’s work ethic in the fifth and sixth grades. Throughout the summer, he would work eight to ten hours every day. When his mother called, she would inquire, “Where is Grayson?” We are unable to contact him. I promise that he is now that unrelenting.
Allen’s perseverance and drive to succeed lead him to become a McDonald’s All-American, win a state high school title at Providence, and be rated as a four-star talent in the 2014 class by 247sports.
as well as a scholarship at Duke, where he played a key role in the Blue Devils’ national title victory.
The 6-foot-4, 198-pound player was selected by the Utah Jazz with the 21st overall pick in the first round of the 2018 NBA Draft. Suns coach Frank Vogel has praised Allen’s winning mentality, referring to him as a “competitor.”
Allen’s competitive mentality has occasionally gotten the better of him, as evidenced by his widely reported tripping events at Duke, which turned him into a divisive figure. He is the most recent example of a player that supporters adore on their side but detest when he dons the rival team’s uniform due to his tough play style in the NBA.
Martin thinks that supporters should move on.
When questioned about Allen’s character, Martin responded, “Give him a chance.” What has been the subject of his work throughout the last, say, three years? He’s a fierce competitor, and I can assure you that every company appreciates that.
Vogel expressed what Martin had said. Allen is “just a guy that’s going out there and playing clean and playing hard,” the speaker continued, adding that the incidents were “all in his past.”
Coach Mike Krzyzewski asked Allen to alter his playing approach while he was at Duke in order to benefit the team.
“At Duke, Coach K advised me to focus more on driving than shooting,” Allen said. He just believed that my finest skills at the time were attacking downhill, going to the rim, being aggressive, and finishing with my athleticism at the rim throughout my freshman and sophomore years. But as I reached senior year, he was like, “All right, I need you to take a.
Allen now starts among some of the greatest players in the NBA thanks to his ability to adapt. He had to make the necessary adjustments. For example, Allen was supposed to fill a different function in Milwaukee than he does in Phoenix.
“They’ll already have five players in the paint 70–80% of the time when you’re playing with Giannis (Antetokounmpo). To be playing next to the two-time NBA Most Valuable Player for the Bucks, Allen stated, “So if you pass up a 3 and drive it, you’re not going to go anywhere.”
We’re getting a lot of kick-aheads with the Suns, so I can drive in transition. a lot of swing-swing in which I try to close a game. Additionally, during the past month or two, I’ve been getting run.
Martin wasn’t overly shocked by Allen’s breakthrough this year, given the amount of effort Allen has been putting in for more than ten years.
Martin remarked, “We sliced up all their offensive plays when he got drafted by Utah.” “I promise he’s doing it with the Phoenix offense, because we worked on every shot he could possibly get out of their offense. and he won’t quit the gym until he masters those shots.
Allen has also excelled in a group that included Durant, Booker, and Beal at the top.
This season, he has the highest eFG% (66.8%) of any non-big player in the NBA. With the exception of Allen’s latest ankle niggle, the Suns have won 10 of their previous 13 games and are finally healthy enough to host the Bucks and Jazz this week at Footprint Center. Allen previously played for both teams.
The man who has held national collegiate championship and state high school trophies is now back at work, attempting to get his hands on another award. It’s the Larry O’Brien Trophy, which goes to NBA champions and which the Suns have never won throughout their existence.
