Due to plantar fasciitis, player Kristaps Porzingis of the Boston Celtics will not represent Latvia at the FIBA World Cup.
Porzingis made the announcement on X, a social networking site that was formerly known as Twitter, stating that he decided to take action on the foot ailment following an MRI and consulting with the Latvian coaching and medical staff as well as the Celtics.
Porzingis wrote in Latvian, “I promise that I will be there and support the team as much as I can, but such a decision is not easy to make.”
The Celtics said on Wednesday that Porzingis will miss time with an injury that will require four to six weeks of rehabilitation. It is anticipated that he will be cleared to report for training camp.
In his statement, Porzingis stated that he had already had “several weeks of recovery,” although he did not specify when he will be able to play basketball again.
On August 25, the World Cup kicks off in Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
In a three-team deal in June, Boston acquired Porzingis from the Washington Wizards. After losing just one game in the NBA Finals, the Celtics acquired the 7-foot-3 Porzingis in exchange for defensive specialist Marcus Smart, who was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. In his final season in Washington, Porzingis averaged a career-high 23.2 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.
